Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus is a Eurasian island country situated in the eastern Mediterranean south of Turkey, west of the Levant, north of Egypt, and east-southeast of Greece. Cyprus is the third-largest Mediterranean island and one of the most popular tourist destinations. The Republic of Cyprus is an internationally recognized state. The Capital and largest city is Nicosia. The Official languages are Greek, Turkish and English, the country got Independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October 1960. The total Area is 9,251 km², Population according to 2007 census is 788,457 and density of population is 85/km². The official currency is Euro (EUR), adopted on 1 January 2008. The time zone is UTC +2. The temperate of the country is Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters. The terrain of the country has central plain with mountains to north and south; scattered but significant plains along southern coast. You can get in the country by plane or by boat, the main airport of Cyprus being Larnaca International Airport (LCA), located on the outskirts of Larnaka. You can get around the country by bus, by shared taxi or by car. European Union citizens can enter with a valid identity card; Cyprus is a member state of the European Union. The government of Cyprus is a Presidential republic where the head of state and the government is the President, who is elected by the universal suffrage for a five-year term, adopted in the year 1960. The House of Representatives currently has 59 members elected for a five year term, 56 members by proportional representation and 3 observer members representing the Maronite, Latin and Armenian minorities. Governing bodies of sport in Cyprus include the Cyprus Automobile Association, Cyprus Badminton Federation, Cyprus Basketball Federation, Cyprus Cricket Association, Cyprus Football Association, Cyprus Rugby Federation and the Cyprus Volleyball Federation.
